While many of us are supposed to see a dentist twice a year, floss daily and brush their teeth twice a day, many people do not. With the added burden of eating too much candy and sugary drinks, some of us pretend shock and amazement when a dentist tells us that we have caries.
There are things you can do in your everyday life to minimize getting cavities. Here are some tips Tip # 1 Use a straw when drinking fruit juices, soft drinks and even coffee. Refreshments and coffee stain teeth and the sugar in them erode tooth enamel. An easy way to stop this is simply using a straw to drink on a regular basis such drinks. Tip # 2 Drink water when eating something sweet. Why? Because drinking water can be as effective as flossing. The water helps to get in between the teeth, leaving the sugar to make as much damage as possible. Tip # 3 Another tip, just make sure you drink water. First, it prevents you from drinking all those sugary drinks. Second, most cities like Chicago, where I live, putting fluoride in public drinking water. It is good for teeth. In fact, I daresay, drink tap water instead of buying bottled water. Tip # 4 Use a mouthwash and toothpaste with fluoride in it every day. Fluoride helps maintain strong and healthy teeth. TIP # 5 Eat a piece of fruit. Eat a piece of fruit, especially an apple, it helps to clean teeth between brushings, makes for a good snack, fresh fruit and helps fight tooth decay. Tip # 6 Do not eat sweet snacks during the day, but only after dinner. Sugary foods attack your teeth 20 minutes after you finish eating. If you eat something sweet after dinner, it is more likely to brush your teeth immediately after, as opposed to during the day. Tip # 7 Chewing sugarless gum can help promote good dental hygiene and to help reduce cavities. Why? Sugar-free gum helps to produce the sage, which turns out to be a natural mouthwash. It is also a worthwhile option if you can not brush their teeth after eating. TIP # 8 When flossing remember to pay special attention to the back of the teeth, so many people over look.
